What you need to do...

What you need to do

Did you know that Akon can speak French and Wolof (Senegalese) as well as English? And that Wyclef Jean also speaks Haitian Creole (Haiti)? They know the point in learning another language, and here’s your chance to tell the world why ‘English is not enough’.

What are we looking for?

  • We are looking for originality and creativity. Clips will not be judged on technical excellence, and if we like a clip which is not great quality, we could arrange for it to be re-shot at our expense.
  • Clips can focus on one language in particular, make a general point about the benefits of languages, or actually be filmed in another language.
  • They should be designed to appeal to young people rather than adults.
  • Clips should be no longer than two minutes in length.

Hints and tips

Here are some ideas to help you get started. Take a look also at the links on why languages work to get inspired.

  • Look at some of the clips listed as our favourites on YouTube.
  • Which ones did you like and why?
  • Think about your favourite TV ads. Why do you like them and why do you think they work?
  • What messages work best for languages?

Decide what type of clip you want to make. Here are some ideas:

  • A comedy sketch;
  • An adaptation of an existing piece of footage eg, dubbing a different sound track to a famous scene or advert;
  • An animation involving puppets, figures or cartoons;
  • Actors demonstrating a tricky situation where languages save the day;
  • A rap or music piece;
  • A scene with a voice over;
  • Interviews with people who speak different languages;
  • A piece in a foreign language with subtitles.
